Braces for children and teens

At Torque Orthodontics, our goal is to encourage good dental care and hygiene in our younger patients so that they can enjoy healthy smiles for life. We offer several types of braces to help guide the alignment of your child’s mouth while they grow.

Braces for children and teens

Traditional metal braces

Braces have come a long way over the years, and are now less noticeable and more efficient. At Torque Orthodontics, we use an advanced technology called self-ligating braces, which are able to adjust themselves using a sliding door-type mechanism.

Metal braces are a popular option among our younger patients, as they are an effective and more affordable orthodontic solution. With new advancements, the process is now faster and more comfortable than ever.

Ceramic braces

If you are looking for a more discreet treatment option for your child or teen, ceramic braces could be the solution. These braces are made with brackets that blend in with the colour of your teeth.

They work the same way as metal braces but offer a more aesthetically pleasing look. With self-ligating technology, you can enjoy fewer trips to our office for adjustments.

When should my child first see an orthodontist?

The Australian Society of Orthodontists (ASO) recommends that children have an initial orthodontic consultation by the age of seven. A consultation at this age will enable us to assess your child’s teeth and jaws and identify any treatment they may require in the future.

Some children can benefit from early interceptive orthodontic treatment—often referred to as Phase 1. This early approach can guide jaw development, improve bite alignment, and prevent more serious issues from developing later on.

Conditions that may benefit from early treatment include:

  • Crossbites (where the upper and lower teeth do not align properly)
  • Open bites (when the front teeth do not touch when the mouth is closed)
  • Underbites (where the lower teeth extend beyond the upper teeth) - Narrow upper arch
  • Severe protrusion of front teeth
  • Oral habits such as thumb sucking or tongue thrusting

These issues, if left untreated, may lead to more complex orthodontic problems in the future. A comprehensive evaluation by a Specialist Orthodontist is the best way to determine whether early treatment is recommended. At Torque Orthodontics, we’re here to guide you through the process and help ensure your child receives the right care at the right time.
