Types of braces

At Torque Orthodontics, we use many types of braces because no two smiles are the same. There’s no such thing as one brace fits all in our clinic. At your first appointment, our team will assess your teeth to determine the appliance that’s right for your teeth and jaws.

Do you need braces?

Orthodontic treatment not only straightens teeth, it can correct a misaligned bite (an overbite, underbite, or open bite) and widen a narrow arch to make room for crowded teeth. Straighter teeth allow you to brush and floss effectively, which helps ensure good dental health. A properly aligned bite allows you to chew and speak properly and prevents problems with your jaw.

Traditional metal braces

Traditional metal braces remains the most effective orthodontic treatment method around. That’s why, if we believe you could benefit from traditional metal braces, we’ll recommend them to you. There are some real benefits to wearing metal braces: the brackets are now smaller so the braces are more comfortable to wear and they are easier to look after. This means they’re great on your budget and even better on your teeth!

At Torque Orthodontics, our traditional braces have a modern twist. They’re known as self-ligating braces. At first glance, self-ligating braces look much like traditional braces, but upon closer inspection, you’ll notice some subtle, yet effective, differences. Rather than using elastic ties to encourage your teeth to move into position, self-ligating braces use an innovative sliding mechanism. This means the braces can respond much better to the natural movement of your teeth as they’re guided into position by the archwire. This also makes them much more comfortable to wear.

Clear braces

Clear braces, or ceramic braces, are very similar to traditional metal braces in that they consist of brackets and wires. The difference is the brackets are made from tooth-coloured ceramic rather than metal. This makes them much less noticeable. At Torque Orthodontics clear braces are placed on the upper teeth only.

Invisible braces

Invisible braces are Invisalign aligners which are made from clear medical grade plastic which are virtually invisible These aligners, which look like thin sports mouthguards, are custom made to fit over your teeth and to move them into position. They make keeping your teeth clean throughout treatment easy because you can remove them when eating, brushing or flossing. Find out more about these aligners on our Invisalign page.

Partial braces

Sometimes, treatment for isolated orthodontic issues, such as tooth crowding or spacing, can be treated with partial braces, braces that are placed on only some of the teeth. Treatment time and cost tends to be less than with full braces.
